Cotton Majnu Khes is a traditional handwoven textile from South Asia, particularly popular in Pakistan and India. It is a type of Khes, which is a woven cotton fabric commonly used for shawls, wraps, or bedding. The Majnu Khes variety is distinguished by its intricate patterns and soft texture.
Chhota Pinjra literally translates to “small cage”, and in khes weaving it refers to a tight, small check/grid pattern that looks like a cage.
Traditional khes weaving communities (especially in Punjab and Sindh) didn’t use standardized design codes. Instead, they named patterns based on what they resembled in everyday life:
- Grid of small squares → looked like a bird cage → pinjra
- Smaller, tighter grid → chota pinjra
- Larger checks → bara pinjra
