Behind the Loom
Weaving Tales of the Soil
At Bistaray, every thread tells a story — stories of skilled hands, ancient traditions, and the rich cultural heritage of South Asia. We are dedicated to preserving and celebrating the art of handwoven textiles, bringing you authentic Khes, Dhurries, Kilims, and accessories crafted using techniques passed down through generations.
Based in Islamabad, Pakistan, we work directly with artisan communities to ensure that each piece you bring into your home carries the warmth of tradition and the soul of craftsmanship.

The Artisans Behind Every Weave
Our textiles are born from the hands of the Jolaha - the traditional weaving community of Punjab whose identity, livelihood, and legacy are inseparable from the loom. For generations, Jolaha families have passed down the art of weaving as both a craft and a calling, their fingers fluent in a language of thread and pattern that no machine can truly replicate.
Today, many of these master weavers face the quiet threat of a dying tradition as industrialization and fast fashion erode the market for handmade textiles, fewer young people are learning the craft. At Bistaray, we believe this story deserves a different ending.
We work directly with Jolaha artisans across Punjab, partnering with them not just as suppliers, but as the true authors of everything we offer. By bringing their work to a wider audience, we aim to restore dignity, demand, and a sustainable future to a craft that has shaped the cultural fabric of this region for centuries.
Empowerment Through Heritage
Our mission is rooted in two beliefs: that heritage is worth protecting, and that the people who carry it deserve to thrive. Every Bistaray purchase directly supports Jolaha weaving families, providing fair income, affirming the value of their skill, and giving the next generation a reason to stay at the loom.
The Craft: Tradition in Every Thread
Each piece in our collection is a testament to time-honored weaving techniques:
-
Handloom Weaving: Our Khes are woven on traditional pit looms (khaddi), where weavers sit below ground level, operating the loom with both hands and feet in a rhythmic dance perfected over generations.
- Machine Weaving: In contrast, machine-woven Khes are produced using modern power looms, enabling faster production and uniform patterns. Responding to changing market demand and evolving conditions, we have also adopted this method while staying rooted in our craft traditions. These pieces are still woven by skilled artisans, with design cards carefully developed in collaboration with them to preserve authenticity in patterns. Each Khes is then hand-stitched and finished, ensuring that even in a mechanized process, the human touch, attention to detail, and craftsmanship remain integral.
- Duhar Technique: Many of our textiles feature the duhar method, where two separately woven parts are expertly joined from the middle, creating distinctive patterns and structural integrity.
- Natural Materials: We use pure cotton and wool, chosen for their durability, comfort, and ability to carry traditional geometric patterns and designs.
- Geometric Artistry: From the moonlight-inspired patterns of Chandni Khes to the romantic folk traditions of Majnu Khes, each design carries cultural meaning and aesthetic beauty.
Cultural Heritage: The Story of Khes
The Khes is more than a textile - it is woven into the fabric of South Asian life. For centuries, these handwoven wraps have been:
- Treasured Heirlooms: Passed down through generations, often included in dowries as symbols of love and prosperity
- Daily Companions: Used as wraps, blankets, and floor coverings, adapting to the rhythms of daily life
- Cultural Markers: Different patterns and techniques represent various regions, communities, and occasions
- Gifts of Significance: Presented during weddings, births, and celebrations as tokens of blessing and good fortune
By bringing a Bistaray textile into your home, you become part of this living heritage; connecting your space to centuries of tradition and craftsmanship.
Our Commitment: Sustainability & Artisan Livelihoods
We believe that preserving traditional crafts means supporting the people who practice them. Our approach is rooted in:
- Fair Partnerships: Working directly with Jolaha artisan families to ensure fair compensation and sustainable livelihoods
- Natural Materials: Using cotton and wool (mostly) that are gentle on the environment and showcase the beauty of natural fibers
- Traditional Techniques: Supporting slow, mindful production methods that honor both craft and craftsperson
